Project Description

Central heat pump water heater (“CHPWH”) systems are an emerging technology (or “Technology”) that can supply efficient, electrified domestic hot water to multifamily and commercial buildings with load-shifting capabilities. Standard designs rely on bulky, pressurized hot water storage tanks with several downsides including high cost, inefficient use of space, and installation challenges. CHPWH systems that use phase change materials (“PCM”) as a storage medium may address these issues with a significantly smaller footprint, simplified installation, and improved efficiency. This proposed project will demonstrate a new packaged CHPWH with PCM storage and load shifting capability in a real-world multifamily application. This first-of-its-kind field testing is a critical step toward broader adoption and program support. The project will assess performance, energy impacts, and provide recommendations for product improvement, early adopters, and program support pathways.
