Project Description

Cohen Ventures, Inc. DBA Energy Solutions (“Implementer”) and their subcontractors (collectively, the “Program Team”) will hold a virtual event targeted to stakeholders interested in updates on the approved and completed Technology Support Research (“TSR”) and Technology Development Research (“TDR”) projects from the CalNEXT program. The purpose of this event will be to

1. Provide context on completed or near-completed projects

2. Explain the importance of CalNEXT projects for California energy efficiency (“EE”) and decarbonization goals

3. Describe the impacts the projects intend to have on the utility portfolios

4. Present research or project findings

5. Highlight technology transfer recommendations and next steps (for example, other research that might be needed to complement ongoing projects)

6. Receive any audience feedback and questions.

To meet the needs of various stakeholder types, the Program Team will attempt to organize the webinars by TPM end-use or other themes, such as industry sector, to effectively engage stakeholders. The scheduling will be set based on a quarterly view of project completion schedules, but may vary to accommodate the best groupings, for example if delaying a webinar six (6) weeks would allow for grouping of three (3) projects addressing multifamily housing.

An example grouping of completed projects within a quarter by sector into four (4) webinars  might look as detailed below. These project groupings are subject to change and will be determined in collaboration with Program Team:

Webinar 1: Industrial & Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (“HVAC”)

  • Demonstration of “Combi” Air-To-Water Heat Pump (to be completed February 2026)
  • Residential Multi-function Heat Pump Market Study (completed Q4 2025)
  • Agricultural Sector Adoption of Pump Energy Index Pumps Market Study (completed Q4 2025)
  • Comfort Impacts of Partial Coverage air source heat pumps (“ASHPs”) (completed Q4 2025)

Webinar 2: Foodservice

  • Commercial Kitchen Hot Water System Decarbonization Market Needs Study (to be completed April 2026)
  • High Speed Oven Energy Use Field Monitoring for the Commercial Foodservice Industry (to be completed January 2026)
  • Restaurant Field Monitoring (completed Q4 2025)
  • Overcoming Key Barriers to Electrification of Foodservice Hot Water in California (completed Q4 2025)

Webinar 3: Commercial & Portfolio Enhancements

  • Load Shape Planning Tool Development (to be completed May 2026)
  • Optimization of Deemed Data Collection Requirements (to be completed April, 2025)
  • Wastewater Energy Transfer (“WET”) Heat Recovery Systems Market Study (completed Q4, 2025)
  • Embodied Carbon One-for-One Material Substitution Market Characterization (completed Q4, 2025)

Webinar 4: Multifamily

  • Return-to-primary Central HPWH System Field Demonstration (to be completed June 2026)
  • Multifamily Domestic Hot Water Recirculation Survey (to be completed April 2026)
  • Multifamily Central Heat Pump Water Heater Field Study (to be completed February 2026)
  • Smart Ventilation Retrofit Demonstration Project (completed Q4, 2025)

An alternative example grouping of webinars by TPM end use could look as follows:

Webinar 1: HVAC & Whole Buildings

  • Demonstration of “Combi” Air-To-Water Heat Pump (to be com (to be completed February 2026)
  • ASHRAE Guideline 36 Open Source Supervisory Control Technology Development and Demonstration (to be completed January 2026)
  • Field Study of HVAC Cost Optimized Supply Air Temperature Reset (CORE) (completed Q4 2025)
  • Smart Ventilation Retrofit Demonstration Project (completed Q4 2025)

Webinar 2: Lighting, Plug Loads & Appliances

  • Performance Assessment of Integrated Core Daylighting Technology (to be completed April 2026)
  • Market and Technical Evaluation of Combination Washer-Dryer Units for Multifamily Buildings (to be completed March 2026)
  • Vehicle-to-Everything Round-Trip Efficiency Market Study (completed Q4 2025)
  • Electrification Enablement via Load Balancing Solutions Focus Pilot (competed Q4 2025)

Webinar 3: Water Heating

  • Multifamily Central Heat Pump Water Heater Field Study (to be completed February 2026)
  • Commercial Kitchen Hot Water System Decarbonization Market Needs Study (to be completed April 2026)
  • Multifamily Domestic Hot Water Recirculation Survey (to be completed April 2026)
  • Return-to-primary Central HPWH System Field Demonstration (to be completed June 2026)

Webinar 4: Process Loads

  • Packaged Propane Refrigeration Market Analysis (to be completed March 2026)
  • Comparative Field Assessment of Carbon Dioxide (“CO₂”) System Performance vs. Hydrofluorocarbon (“HFC”) Refrigeration in Supermarkets (to be completed January 2026)
  • High Speed Oven Energy Use Field Monitoring for the Commercial Foodservice Industry (to be completed January 2026)
  • Datacenter Liquid Cooling Market Characterization (completed Q4 2025)

Agendas will be finalized closer to the date, and may be structured as follows:

  • Introduction to CalNEXT
  • Introduction to the sector and TPMs of focus in today’s webinar
  • Project Presentations with Q&A
  • Open Discussion

Depending on the number of completed projects, the grouping may change and will be communicated out to stakeholders through each webinar announcement and registration link. Attendees will also be educated about the value of engaging with the CalNEXT program, with a clear call to action for how to engage and submit ideas/projects.
